A 22-YEAR-OLD man caught speeding at 94mph along the main A4 road at Maguiresbridge has been banned from driving in Northern Ireland for six weeks.
Paul Niblock, of Drumshannon, Newbliss, county Monaghan, was charged with driving at excess speed in a 60mph limit on September 23, 2016.
Niblock, who represented himself, entered a guilty plea when he appeared before Fermanagh Magistrates Court yesterday (Wednesday) morning.
The court heard that, at 12.30pm on September 23, police detected the defendant’s vehicle travelling at 94 mph on the A4 Belfast Road at Maguiresbridge – 34mph in excess of the speed limit.
The defendant had no previous convictions, the court heard.
District judge, Nigel Broderick, observed that the defendant had been driving at a “very high” speed and asked him if he had anything to say, to which Niblock replied: “Sorry.”
He explained that, on the day in question, he had been running half-an-hour late for a work-related appointment.
Giving the defendant credit for taking the matter seriously and coming to court, the judge said that, nevertheless, speed was a “major factor” in road accidents and there would have to be a disqualification to act as a deterrent.
Taking into account the guilty plea and his clear record, Mr Broderick imposed a £200 fine, a £15 offender levy and banned him from driving in this jurisdiction for six weeks.
