A well attended event to mark the retirement of Dr. Neill Morton as the last headmaster of Portora Royal School was held in Portora on Saturday evening last.
The governors of Portora had commissioned a portrait in oils of Dr. Morton, which has been the practice in the school when headmasters retire.
On Saturday evening the portrait was unveiled by the artist, Carol Johnston RUA, a well known portrait artist from Lisburn, and Dr. Morton.
The portrait will hang with those of former headmasters in the school.
A presentation of a painting of the school by Belfast artist, Barbara Allen RUA, was given to Dr. Morton by Barbara Johnston on behalf of the retiring governors of the school.
Warm tributes were paid to Dr. Morton by Mrs. Johnston and others for the outstanding leadership he had given as headmaster at Portora. Mrs. Johnston also presented a bouquet of flowers to Mrs. Morton.
A spokesperson said: “The function, which was attended by former governors, staff and friends of the school, was a very fitting way to bring down the curtain on a very important chapter in the life of the Royal School.
“The academic achievements of Portora pupils in recent years have been the highest of any school in County Fermanagh and the best of any boys’ school in Northern Ireland.”
Dr. Morton was an enthusiastic supporter of the amalgamation of the two grammar schools which led to the establishment of Enniskillen Royal Grammar School.
