A Fermanagh woman who was left in a coma following a car crash in County Donegal that killed her two friends has been told she will never walk again.

Rachel Elliott, who lives outside Irvinestown, suffered serious injuries to her brain, back and pelvis after she was thrown out the back window of a blue Peugeot 306 when it hit a wall in the seaside resort of Bundoran three weeks ago.

Shiva Devine (20) from Belleek and Conall McAleer (20) from Ederney, who were passengers in the car, died at the scene. Two others were seriously injured.

The 25 year old says she is “devastated” after doctors told her there is only a one per cent chance that she will be able to walk again.

“It’s horrible, knowing that I can’t move my legs,” she told The Impartial Reporter.

“It’s awful. I feel like loads of weight are on my legs. When the doctor told me how serious it was I cried my eyes out.

“They say my spinal chord is crushed and there is only a one per cent chance of walking again. I know they have to be brutally honest with you, but I still can’t believe it,” she said.

Miss Elliott, who will undergo an operation on her shoulder in Belfast today (Thursday), says she is determined to walk again for her three year old son Ronnie.

“What hurts the most is the thought of not being able to run after my child,” she said.

“If they send me home in a wheelchair, how am I going to get out of bed at night to get my child a bottle? How do I manage that? How do I cope with a child if I am in a wheelchair?”

Singer John Garrity, a friend of Miss Elliott, has organised a country night at Enniskillen Hotel on October 8 (from 10pm) with an array of local talent, including Johnny Brady, Ritchie Remo, Lisa McCrory, Gavin McAloon, The Tumblin' Paddies and others.

All money raised from the event will go towards Miss Elliott’s rehabilitation.

“The reason I am doing this is because Rachel has been a good friend of mine for years,” said Mr. Garrity.

“When I heard about what happened I thought someone had to do something to get a bit of money together. We have all been shocked at what happened and that her injuries are so severe. There are many people who are more than happy to help.

“We now have a concert planned and expect a good crowd. We are all behind her,” he said.

Miss Elliott has been “overwhelmed” by the response to the fundraising event.

“I can’t believe it, I am totally and utterly overwhelmed by the support. John and I have been best friends for years, so I really appreciate all that he and others are doing.

“I want to walk again, I want to do it for my son, and I’ll get private treatment if I have to,” said a determined Miss Elliott.
