Officers at Fermanagh and Omagh District Council attended a number of conferences in England recently aimed at tackling fly tipping and to aid waste management within the Council area.

A one day seminar on Tackling Fly Tipping and Preventing Illegal Rubbish Dumping was held in London while in Birmingham Council officers attended the two day RWM Recycling and Waste Management Conference and Exhibition.

Attendance at the conference was approved at a recent meeting of the Environmental Services Committee.

Mr Kevin O'Gara, Director of Environment and Place at Fermanagh and Omagh District Council, stated that the conference on Fly Tipping conference was “right on the button” in relation to what the council are trying to combat.

“There are a lot of conferences like this that we would get from time to time but we have looked at this and we feel that the content of this seminar is right on the button on what we are trying to deal with.”

A report is to be compiled from the fly tipping conference and presented to Council with the hope, according to Mr O'Gara, that the best practice models right across the UK can be established and “some innovative thinking” shared to tackle the troublesome issue of fly tipping.

For the conference in Birmingham it was proposed that two council officers attend for one day. The conference was dealing with, among other topics, the issue of recycling and waste minimisation. A report is also to be complied on this conference.
