Construction is underway at the site of the new South West College campus in Enniskillen.

The construction phase of the project officially commenced on June 29, 2018 with mobilisation on site from July 23.

To date, numerous activities have already been completed including site clearance and trench filling along with the implementation of site compounds and accommodation. Reduced level excavation and rock excavation are near completion.

The structural foundations are currently ongoing, along with the setting of holding down bolts, retaining walls, stair core foundation and rising walls.

The structural steel frame is scheduled for completion at the end of December 2018. When this is completed, it will give a good impression of the scale and massing of the building as it curves around the edge of the site in a sensitive and site-specific response to its unique setting.

The respective design teams of Tracey Brothers contracting firm and South West College are working collaboratively on the design and build contract to achieve the projective completion date of April 2020 for the landmark building.

Project Sponsor Eimear Grugan said: “The building will be sector leading in terms of the technology it employs in its construction and its sustainability. It aims to achieve PassivHaus Premium standards and BREEAM Outstanding. PassivHaus requires precision about how the building performs while BREEAM has a wider remit and measures the performance of the whole project based on a credits system.”

She continued: “The project represents significant investment by the Department for the Economy. It will create a dynamic juxtaposition between a 21st Century building and the adjacent 19th Century workhouse, which will be developed independently by Fermanagh and Omagh District Council.”
