Sinn Féín councillor Stephen McCann says that there is a deep sense of sadness and loss among the community of Trillick and further afield at the death of former Sinn Féín Councillor Peter Kelly or Petey as he was affectionately known by all who knew him.
Speaking in warm tribute to his deceased colleague Cllr McCann, former chairman of Fermanagh and Omagh District Council said: “On behalf of Sinn Féin and in a personal capacity I would like to extend my heartfelt sympathy and condolences to Petey’s loving wife Pauline, daughter Clodagh, son in law Brendan, his grandchildren, sisters and wider family circle and friends
"First and foremost, Petey was a family man. He doted on his family and particularly his grandchildren who always brought a smile to his face.
“While quiet and unassuming by nature, Petey was a committed to and determined in everything he believed and ever put his hand to. A life-long republican, he was first elected in 2001 to Omagh District Council, representing the people of Trillick until ill health forced him to retire in 2015.
“Petey was predeceased by his brother Patsy who was a popular local representative until his murder in 1974.
“He was a strong advocate for the rural community, rural issues and the farming community. As a life-long farmer he knew at first hand the challenges they faced and their issues of concern were always to the fore. "
