A driver was arrested on suspicion of “driving with excess alcohol” following a two vehicle collision in Lisbellaw.

The collision occurred on the Farnamullan Road, Lisbellaw at around 12.50am on Sunday morning, June 9.

A spokeswoman for the Police Service of Northern Ireland (PSNI) stated: “Two vehicles were involved. The driver of one of the vehicles was arrested on suspicion of driving with excess alcohol, while the driver and passenger from the other vehicle made off from the scene.”

The PSNI spokeswoman added: “Enquiries to identify them are ongoing.”

A post on the PSNI Fermanagh Facebook page, which is understood to have been written by a police officer who attended the incident, stated: “For me en route to the call I get that hard to describe feeling in my stomach. I try and mentally prepare myself for the worst. My first job is to give help to who needs it the most. But how do I make that decision.”

The police officer added: “Attending a road traffic collision can be challenging for all our emergency services. Then add alcohol to the mix. There are still people who believe it’s ok to get drunk and then get behind the wheel. The message still is not sinking in. How would you feel if you killed or injured someone. If you lost your job or suffered life changing injuries as a result of the decisions you made. No one is invincible.”

“In our district this weekend we have made several arrests for drink driving,” concluded the police officer.
