A member of hospital staff received minor injuries after an oxygen cylinder reportedly exploded causing a minor fire at the South West Acute Hospital (SWAH) in Enniskillen this afternoon (December 10).

The Impartial Reporter understands that a nurse sustained burns to their hands when a portable oxygen cylinder exploded in the hospital's Critical Care Unit.

A spokeswoman for the Western Health and Social Care Trust stated: "An incident occurred in the Critical Care Unit in the South West Acute Hospital today involving a portable oxygen cylinder. The incident was dealt with quickly and will be reviewed under normal Trust protocol. There is no disruption to services."

Two Northern Ireland Fire and Rescue Service (NIFRS) appliances from Enniskillen Fire Station attended the incident at the hospital which was reported at 12.32pm today.

A spokesman for the NIFRS stated: "Firefighters were called to an incident where an issue with an oxygen cylinder had caused a minor fire. One member of staff received minor inures and received treatment from hospital personnel."

"No action was required by Firefighters and the scene was handed over to a senior representative of staff. The incident was dealt with by 1.09pm," the spokesman concluded.
