Approximately 60 people will be taking part in a massive Yoga session this weekend to raise funds for The Aisling Centre in Enniskillen to support those needing help with their mental health because of Covid-19. The group has already raised £1,800 and hopes to top £2,000 after the weekend. Businesses have also supported the event with donations of participant prizes with all participants being entered into a draw and Joe Mahon of Mahon’s Hotel in Irvinestown hosted a number of “Joe Shows” for the event on Facebook Live.

Organised by Ederney-based Yoga teacher, Anne Monaghan, the Yogathon will commence at 9am on Saturday with people doing yoga in an assigned 20-minute slot finishing at 5pm on Saturday with more sessions on Sunday from 9am to 5pm also.

“I will do the first session on Facebook live and people can follow that or do their own session. Everyone will be doing sessions in the comfort of their own homes and I will post a photograph of each participant or group to my Facebook page Well Worth It!” said Dr. Monaghan.

Yoga has been scientifically proven to be excellent in maintaining good mental health and to help treat anxiety and depression as well as physical conditions including arthritis, Fibromyalgia, Bursitis, and asthma.

“Yoga turns on our calming nervous system and the combination of breathing practice, poses and meditation is extremely effective in mental health management. Also, by doing yoga our brain tells our body we are safe and this results in our heart rate slowing and reduced anxiety response in the body," Dr. Monaghan explained.
