Two Enniskillen businesses have been targeted by online scammers this week.
Erneside Shopping Centre, and Crowes Nest have both been targeted by scammers which cloned their Facebook ‘like’ pages and made a ‘friend’ page.
Those targeted were sent messages through Facebook messenger, which encouraged people to visit a third-party website where they were asked to enter their credit card details to confirm their identity to win a prize.
Erneside Shopping Centre released a statement on Saturday evening after Facebook users were targeted by just such a ‘scam’ account.
It read: “It has come to our attention that our Facebook site has been cloned. ‘ErnesideShopping-centre’ has been reported to Facebook.
“Please do not engage with this site other than to block and report it if you receive any messages from it.
“We apologise for any inconvenience caused and are working directly with Facebook to resolve the issue.”
The Crowes Nest were also targeted this week when a fake page was set up and a similar message sent to users who had ‘friended’ the page.
A spokesperson from Crowes Nest said: “Last night [Monday] we received several messages from customers saying they received friend requests or messages inviting them to enter a competition with a link from a page pretending to be Crowes Nest.
“Once we were made aware of this, we posted on our own page highlighting the fact that this page was fake. The messages seem to have stopped coming in, but we are unsure if people are still receiving them.”
Police in Enniskillen encourage anyone who believes they may have been a victim of a scam or attempted scam of any kind to get in touch by calling 101.
Inspector Rory Hoy said: “Scammers will do whatever they can to con people out of their hard-earned money. Scammers don’t care who their victim is, they just want their money and will employ whatever tactic is necessary.
“The threat of fraud, both online and offline, against the public is a focus for us and I want to take this opportunity to again appeal to people that on no account should anyone disclose their personal or financial details over the phone; always err on the side of caution.
“Legitimate businesses and providers will never seek their personal details, such as banking information. Guarding your personal and banking details is essential. Never disclose them to any unauthorised person.
“If it seems too good to be true, it probably is.”
