THERE was widespread sadness following the death of Mrs. Ethel Adeline Somerville, on January 15, 2020.

Ethel was born on September 10, 1957 to William and Martha Granleese. She was the oldest of six children, growing up on the family farm in Edenbane House, Tempo, with Ethel receiving her education at Coolerkelly Primary School and Fivemiletown High School.

Ethel left school to work at a local textile factory and became a cook at Cooneen Textile, Fivemiletown. She always had a passion for cooking and baking, which she furthered her career with by working in the kitchen at the Erne Hospital for a number of years.

She later changed career path and commenced working at Creagh and Tempo Post Offices, while working at the family pub. It was while working at the family pub that she met her late husband, Mervyn, and they married on November 3, 1981.

After their marriage, they made their home at Drumbo, Irvinestown, with Mervyn’s parents, where Ethel cared for her late mother-in-law, who was declining in health.

In 1984, Ethel became a mother after the birth of their daughter, Wendy. Ethel most enjoyed being a loving mother and housewife.

Later, Ethel returned to her passion for cooking for others, and commenced employment at Coolness Nursing Home.

Ethel enjoyed socialising and Country music, and was especially fond of get-togethers with her family and friends.

Ethel was also a fond member of the Irvinestown Cancer Survivors group, who memorably formed a guard of honour outside the church upon her funeral.

Over the years, Ethel experienced health problems, with her health sadly declining rapidly in the final year before her death.

She was predeceased by her husband, Mervyn; her father, William; mother, Martha; and brother, Robert.

She is further survived by her daughter, Wendy; son-in-law Fergal; grandchildren Molly, Charlie and Ellie; brothers Kenny and Wesley; sisters Linda and Meta; and the wider family circle.

Ethel peacefully passed away at the South West Acute Hospital on January 15, 2020, surrounded by her loving family.

Ethel’s funeral service was held at Derryvullen North Parish Church and led to rest at Townhill graveyard. Funeral arrangements were carried out by Marcus Madill at S.R Elliott and son.
