A MAN caught twice by police with defectives tyres that were so worn the wire was beginning to show has ended up with a driving ban.

Michael McKenna (20), of Drumcullion Road, Drumierna, Ederney received six penalty points in total for the offences – and with six points already on his licence, the total from the additional points resulted in the disqualification.

At Enniskillen Magistrates Court on Monday, it was heard that on December 4 last, police observed a Volkswagen Jetta on the Dublin Road, Enniskillen at around 11pm.

It was stopped by police and three of the tyres were found to be defective, with wires showing inside one of them.

Then, on March 21, the defendant was stopped again, this time at Main Street, Irvinestown at around 10.30pm.

When officers checked the vehicle, the rear tyres had no tread depth around the full surface of the tyre, and wires were starting to protrude.

McKenna’s solicitor, Tommy Owens, told the court his client had put on two new front tyres and had put a new back tyre on the car, but due to difficulties with the car not being properly aligned, they had been worn out.

Mr. Owens said McKenna had replaced all tyres after the second incident and showed this to police within five days. He added it was obvious McKenna was going to lose his licence, but asked the court to keep the disqualification to a minimum.

Along with the six penalty points for having five defective tyres over the two dates, which led to the disqualification from driving, District Judge Steven Keown also fined McKenna £425.
