A man caught more than 20mph over the speed limit has been disqualified from driving for one week.

Mervyn Kelly (60), with an address of Fecarry Road, Omagh, was detected travelling at 83mph along the Belfast Road at around 2.48pm on December 18, 2020.

When he was stopped and spoken to by police he was offered a fixed penalty notice but requested for the matter to be dealt with at court.

Brian O’Sullivan, barrister for Kelly, told the court his client was in the passing lane, overtaking and travelled at the speed for a brief period of time.

Mr. O’Sullivan asked the court to consider a short disqualification for Kelly as the totting up of points would lead to a longer driving ban.

District Judge Steven Keown said it was unfortunate Kelly had accrued penalty points after a long and clear driving record and gave him credit for the guilty plea at the first opportunity. In addition to the one week ban, Kelly was fined £150.
