THE subject of butterflies is proving of immense interest at Jones Memorial Primary School, Enniskillen.
In fact, the insects have been the source of considerable excitement as the children have had the opportunity to study the life cycle of a butterfly at close quarters.
In September, the P1 classroom assistants spotted tiny eggs on nasturtium leaves and these were brought into the P1 rooms and kept in viewing boxes. Caterpillars hatched and the children watched them eating leaves.
Their growth was observed and then the caterpillars made cocoons.
These overwintered in the classrooms and recently there was great excitement when butterflies emerged.
These were then released in the school’s conservation garden.
