THE BLACKLION SHOOTING

THERE were many exaggerated stories concerning the shooting of a girl in Blacklion Post Office, by a soldier who was one of a large party stationed there last week. The shooting was purely an accident, the weapon was not aimed at the girl, but she was struck by a ricochet bullet which hit a stone. It was an unfortunate occurrence, but I am pleased to state that the wound is only a flesh one, and she will shortly be able to run about again.

PETTY THEFTS

The military which were in the Blacklion and Florencecourt districts last week was part of a very large force which was sweeping the Leitrim mountains for men ‘on the run’.

It took two hours to pass through Dowra, and this will give some idea of the dimensions of the force. Some of the men committed petty thefts in the Florencecourt and Mullaghdun districts, chickens and ducks being the favourites.

In some houses seizures were made, but where the occupier was a Special Constable he was respected and his stock suffered no loss.

EPITAPHS

Tombstone inscriptions are at times amusing and not in the least melancholy. An old tombstone at the parish church of St. Mary’s, Acton, which has just been renovated, bears the following inscription:-

She was!

Ah! what was she?

What a wife and mother should be.

That was she.

This reminds me of another-

Here lies the body of Mary Man,

A motor hit her a blow in the back.

And another-

Some have children, some have none,

Here lies the mother of 21.
