THIS week’s walk of the week takes us back to Castle Archdale Forest for the Tom's Island Walk.

This trail not only leads you through woodland, but also takes you along the shores of Lough Erne.

With the following information provided courtesy of Fermanagh and Omagh District Council, you can stay local, and yet still find plenty of natural gems to walk, see and explore that are practically on your doorstep, no matter where you live in the county.

Overview

Tom’s Island trail in Castle Archdale is one of the finest spots to appreciate the stunning beauty of Lower Lough Erne.

Start off by exploring the ruins of Old Castle Archdale – an impressive fortification built in 1612 when the Archdale family arrived in Ireland from Suffolk.

The path then leads you along the river before the wide expanse of Lower Lough Erne opens up in front of you.

You’ll then skirt the lough shore through dense woodland with incredible views of White Island and Davy’s Island.

You will notice Tom’s Island is not actually an island however – before the lough was lowered many years ago it was cut off from the mainland by a shallow strip of water. (Part of the Marble Arch Caves Global Geopark).

The information on this walking route has been provided by Fermanagh and Omagh District Council and also features on a series of walking cards which have been developed to promote walking opportunities, trails and routes within the Council district.

Please note that to help reduce the risk of spreading Covid-19, social distancing should be adhered to.
