AN ENNISKILLEN man who stole hot food from a shop in the town but has no memory of the incident has been convicted of theft.

On January 11, Nathan Maguire (20), of Carnmore Lodge, Enniskillen, entered Rooney’s Spar and was observed on CCTV camera taking food, to the value of £5, from the hot food counter and placing it down the front of his tracksuit bottoms before leaving the shop.

The court heard he was heavily under the influence of drugs at the time, and had no recollection of what took place or why he did it.

Maguire’s solicitor, Michelle McVeigh, said his client had entered a plea at the earliest opportunity and accepted what events took place.

She said that he had consumed alcohol and illegal substances before the incident, and described it as “damning” that Maguire would now have a conviction of dishonesty for £5.

Mrs. McVeigh added that her client wished to apologise to the victims of the theft for his actions.

District Judge Steven Keown gave Maguire credit for his early plea and lack of a previous criminal record as an adult, but warned him this incident must be a “one-off” before ordering him to pay £5 in compensation to the shop, as well as fining him £100.
