THE Western Trust is in the midst of developing a service for those who have suffered from 'long covid'.

For some people, the coronavirus can cause symptoms that last weeks or months after the infection has gone – a condition sometimes called Post-Covid-19 syndrome, or 'long covid'.

Speaking during the Western Trust media briefing last Thursday, Mark Gillespie, Assistant Director of Acute Services, said: “The Department [of Health] is asking each Trust to put a service in place for the autumn and its intentions for right across the region are to have consistency in doing that."

Speaking on the nature of the service, Mr. Gillespie said: “ A person may well require some respiratory rehab after having Covid. They may well benefit from emotional and ongoing psychological support, exercise and wellbeing, and support for [getting] back to work.

“Our intention is, in a multi-disciplinary way, for our staff and local people to have a proactive self-assessed and primary care supportive pathway into a range for services from the autumn.”
