A FIRE in Enniskillen on Tuesday afternoon caused devastation for one local family as the flames from the fire first destroyed their caravan, before then spreading to engulf their home.

The Northern Ireland Fire and Rescue Service (NIFRS) has released details about the fire, which began at 4.09pm and saw eight NIFRS appliances attend the scene.

A NIFRS spokesman said: “Eight appliances in total attended the incident, including an aerial appliance and a water tanker. Two appliances were from Enniskillen Fire Station, two from Strabane Fire Station, and one each was from Irvinestown, Fintona, Belleek and Portadown Fire Stations."

The spokesman continued: “Firefighters were called to a reports of a caravan on fire. The fire destroyed the caravan and spread to an adjacent bungalow.

"Firefighters wore breathing apparatus and used two jets and two hose reel jets to extinguish the fire.

"One male casualty suffered burns to his face and was taken to hospital by the Northern Ireland Ambulance Service (NIAS). The cause of the fire is under investigation and the incident was dealt with by 9.51pm.”

A NIAS spokesman confirmed one casualty was taken from the scene by their paramedics. He said: "NIAS received a 999 call at 4:15pm to assist a casualty in the Rossorry Church Road area of Enniskillen.

"NIAS despatched a rapid response paramedic and an emergency crew to the incident.

"Following assessment and initial treatment at the scene, one patient was taken to the South West Acute Hospital."
