Dr. McCloy, Local Government Board medical inspector, accompanied by Captain Andrews, D.I., paid a visit to the Enniskillen Workhouse last week, with a view of the quartering of two units of the Special Constabulary there. A letter intimating the possible taking over of a portion of the Workhouse was also read from the County Commandant, in case inmates would have to be removed.

Mr. Corrigan - What is this talk about Special Constabulary?

Mr. Healy - They want to come into the Workhouse. That looks bad. I did not think they were reduced to that extent.

Mr. Corrigan - Was it Carson sent for these men?

Mr. Edwards - It was Mick Collins. He and Craig arranged that the other day.

Mr Corrigan thought the proposition absurd. This country had been simply crowded with special police and soldiers for a number of years and during all that time there have been nothing but disorder. As soon as this surplus force floated out there was peace and harmony all round. In that room they had peace and harmony all round, but sometimes their tongues wagged a bit, but no one bled. They should protest against any additional police forces being sent.

Mr. Thos. Elliott inquired what was the cause of the raising of the special police?

Chairman (Mr. Geddis) - The disturbed state of the country.

Mr. Elliott said that it was the killing and the maltreating of the people, that was the reason that gave rise to the raising of the special police. The people who committed the outrages and continued to do so kept the police forces with them. Those outrages were still going on, as could be seen from the Press. Until peace was restored they would have to have Special Constabulary.

Mr. D. Reilly said it would not be advisable at the present time to reduce the Constabulary. They all hoped that their services would not be needed. They had in the Workhouse any amount of accommodation for them.

Chairman - You have accommodation for 1,000.

Mr. Healy made some derogatory remarks regarding the Special Constabulary, and the Chairman said that they were as respectable a body of men as any that sat in that boardroom.

A resolution was passed by a majority that the police be admitted to the house for accommodation, should the necessity arise.
