An uninsured driver who clipped the side of an oncoming car when pulling out on to a road has been handed penalty points and fines.

The incident, which happened on the Boyhill Road, Maguiresbridge on October 27, 2021, resulted in the man being convicted of driving without due care and attention, having no driving licence or insurance.

Police were called to a road traffic collision on the Boyhill Road.

When they arrived the reporting person told them a black vehicle had pulled out and struck their car on the passenger side causing them to crash into a ditch. The black vehicle continued in the direction of Enniskillen.

Police managed to get in touch with the driver, Neeraj Neeraj (19), of Main Street, Maguiresbridge and he returned to the scene and admitted he was the driver.

He said he had recently applied for a provisional driving licence and the car did not belong to him.

It was heard in court that the reporting person's car was not able to be repaired and they had to buy a new one.

The defendant made a full admission and was "very remorseful" according to the prosecution and said he was driving out of a driveway when a car came from the other direction and contact was made.

He said he suffered from anxiety and panicked and had drove away but returned.

Michelle McVeigh, representing Neeraj, told the court the incident happened as Neeraj was working and that he had no clear sight of the road and he accepted he gradually pulled out into the path of traffic.

She said he had very limited English and was going to get someone to come back and translate.

Mrs. McVeigh said her client had already had to pay a significant financial penalty to his former employer who owned the vehicle.

District Judge Steven Keown gave Neeraj credit for his guilty plea and remorse showed and issued six penalty points and fines of £450.
