Due to severe weather in Fermanagh this morning (Thursday, February 24), following overnight snow and more expected throughout the day, one school in the area has closed and another has asked certain year groups not to come in.

This morning, Simon Mowbray, the principal of Devenish College contacted parents asking for students in Year 8 to 11 to stay at home if possible today as, due to Covid testing and snow, the school is under "severe pressure with staff".

Contacting parents directly before 8am via the school's app, Mr. Mowbray said: "I am really sorry for this late notice. With Covid testing and now snow, we are under severe pressure with staff today.

"Can I ask that if your child is in Year-11 and had not left for school, that if you possibly can, please keep them at home today. They will be marked present today.

"Apologies for this really late notice. This is extremely unprecedented," said Mr. Mowbray.

Elsewhere in Fermanagh, Irvinestown Primary School is closed due to snow.

The Education Authority (EA) has reported that a number of school transport routes have been disrupted due to the adverse weather conditions.

"Due to poor weather, a number of school transport routes have been disrupted.

"Parents should consider making alternative arrangements if they can," said a EA spokesperson, noting that areas particularly affected include Dungannon, Cookstown and Aughnacloy.

A yellow weather warning for snow and lightning is currently in place until 8pm tonight.

According to a Met Office spokesperson, frequent heavy snow showers are expected throughout the day, along with very gusty winds and a chance of frequent lightning affecting some places.
