An R driver who was detected travelling more than twice the legal speed limit told police he was on his way to buy paracetamol for his girlfriend.

Police on patrol on the A4 Belfast Road near Maguiresbridge on January 7 detected a BMW 3 Series travelling at 92mph.

They stopped the car and spoke to the driver, Adam James McCaffrey (20), with an address of Milltown Court, Newtownbutler.

He told them he had passed his driving test last September, making him a Restricted driver, and limited to 45mph. There wan an R plate on the front window.

McCaffrey told officers he was going to Asda to buy paracetamol for his girlfriend. Police informed him he would be reported to the PPS.

McCaffrey's solicitor, Michael Fahy, accepted the high speed was always going to concern the court, and that the decision to speed had been "weighing very heavily" on his client's shoulders.

He pointed out that McCaffrey had taken the day off to attend Enniskillen Magistrates Court, and he deeply regretted the incident.

Mr. Fahy said that while McCaffrey was on his way to Asda, he let his speed creep up.

District Judge Steven Keown said it was a very high reading for somebody on R plates, and pointed out that for somebody who drives for a living, a disqualification would put his job in jeopardy.

He told McCaffrey he was staying on the road "by the skin of his teeth", and gave him five penalty points and a £300 fine.
