A man has been give a three-month prison sentence for two counts of criminal damage.

He was also convicted of possession of cannabis.

The charges relate to an incident on January 1 when two BMW cars were damaged in Augher.

Police were called out at 9.30am following reports of a drunk male in the Spar shop on the Main Street.

The male, Jan Navratil (44), of Main Street, Augher, left the shop and went over to the two parked cars and kicked them both numerous times.

He was identified and CCTV footage captured him going into an address on Main Street.

Navratil, who appeared on videolink from Maghaberry Prison, was spoken to and arrested by police, and during a search 2g of cannabis were discovered in his trouser pocket. He made full admissions when questioned.

Ciaran Roddy, barrister for the accused, said it was a "very unsavoury incident" which brought misery on unsuspecting members of the public, and the rationale behind it was not clear.

He said he was instructed that Navratil was feeling guilty at the time for other matters which are going to the Crown Court, and had consumed a lot of alcohol, and knew behaving in this manner would bring him to the attention of police.

Mr. Roddy said it was not a rational way of thinking, but Navratil was in a dark place at the time. He added that it was quite fortunate the damage to the cars was not extensive.

For two counts of criminal damage and possession of a Class-B drug, Navratil received three months, which would have been time served had he not been in custody for other matters.
