A LOCAL man who has had his own battle with cancer has reached out to thank the people of Enniskillen and Fermanagh for supporting a major Cancer Fund for Ireland fundraising event late last year, which saw him raise £24,000.

The main fundraising event saw Ireland and Ulster legend Rory Best walking through the county on a special 180-mile fundraiser, where he was delighted to chat to well-wishers and supporters, as well as being joined by a number of families who had been affected by cancer along the way.

The event also inspired Connor McBarron – who was working as a Technology and Design teacher in St. Michael’s College, Enniskillen, when he was diagnosed with a rare form of cancer in 2013 – and others, to fundraise for the charity too, as he and his family appreciated its support during his own battle with cancer.

He said: “This [was a] worthy cause, which my family and I have experienced much support from since my own cancer journey ... and [the event] helped us to fundraise for the charity.

“What an opportunity on the back of the Rory Best fundraiser!

“We have been overwhelmed by the support and very generous contributions made by people from far and wide who have given to such a worthy cause.

“We had a massive contribution from St. Michael’s College, who did their own fundraiser and raised a very generous £6,765.

“We also had contributions from many sporting organisations within our county, such as Ballinamallard FC, Enniskillen Rugby Club, Fermanagh GAA, etc.

“All I can say is, wow! I am overwhelmed at the total sum, which was an amazing £24,000.

“I want to thank everyone for their very, very generous contribution. On behalf of the Cancer Fund for Children, it is very much appreciated.

“Your generosity will indeed help many families within our county in many ways in the years to come,” added Connor.
