A report by a member of the public to police of a suspected drunk driver resulted in a woman who was over twice the legal limit being stopped.

On February 17, police were contacted about the suspected driver in an Audi A4 at Castle Street, Enniskillen, who was swerving across the road.

Checks on the car showed it was insured to Anne Louise McCaffrey (41), of Derrygonnelly Road, Derrygonnelly, and at approximately 6.15pm it was spotted in the Brook area of Enniskillen heading towards Belleek with no headlights on.

Police activated their lights and the car was stopped at the Loughshore Road.

There was a smell of intoxicating liquor and McCaffrey failed a preliminary breath test, the court heard.

Whilst checking the car, police saw that some of the tyres were in a dangerous condition, with one of them being partially off the rim.

In her evidential breath test, McCaffrey returned a reading of 100mg of alcohol in 100ml of breath.

Her barrister, Éamann Donnelly, told the court his client was currently in a rehab facility for her addiction.

He said he had been instructed that McCaffrey’s alcohol intake increased over the pandemic as she struggled to adapt to the new working structure.

Mr. Donnelly added that his client regretted her actions, was very embarrassed and apologised for the high reading.

Mr. Donnelly also said McCaffrey had not realised how bad of a condition the car was in until she was stopped.

Convicting her of driving with excess alcohol in her breath, and of using a vehicle in a dangerous condition, Judge Steven Keown disqualified McCaffrey from driving for 16 months, and fined her £400.
