A man who drove his friend home after drinking only held a provisional driving licence, a court has heard.

At Enniskillen Magistrates Court on Monday, it was heard police were on patrol in Kesh at around 1.10am on March 28 when they observed a Volkswagen Golf at the roundabout on Main Street.

It turned on to Crevenish Road, where police followed it to an address at Fortview Park, where it stopped. A male – Travis Walker (22), of Eren Park, Kesh – got out of the driver’s seat and spoke to police, informing them he had been drinking.

He was arrested and subsequently returned an evidential breath test reading of 79mg of alcohol in 100ml of breath.

Michael Fahy, representing Walker, asked the court to give his client maximum credit for his plea at the first opportunity.

He said it was an “unfortunate detection” as Walker had been asked by a friend to drive him home.

Mr. Fahy said Walker made full admissions at the roadside and it was discovered he was not insured and held a provisional licence.

Walker paid a “very dear price” for the foolish decision he made, said Mr. Fahy, and he would have to deal with the fall-out from that.

Convicting Travis of driving with excess alcohol in breath, using a motor vehicle without insurance and being an unaccompanied ‘L’ driver, District Judge Steven Keown gave him a 12-month driving ban and £675 in fines.
