Enniskillen will not play host to a Pride Parade this year, it has been confirmed.

Back in 2019, meetings were held to discuss the potential for a Pride event for LGBT+ people, their friends, family, supporters and others in the area, but between the Covid-19 pandemic and the failure to form a committee to organise an event, plans did not materialise.

Erne West SDLP Councillor Adam Gannon confirmed to The Impartial Reporter his early involvement in the formation of a Fermanagh Pride event, and that the event would not proceed in time for the international LGBT+ Pride month, June 1-30.

Councillor Gannon said: “Prior to Covid-19, I had been involved in assisting the establishment of a Fermanagh Pride event.

“I believe there is still an appetite for an event here, with Mid-Ulster and Omagh Prides showing that Pride events can be hugely successful in rural areas.”

Despite no plans being in place as of yet for this year, Councillor Gannon remains optimistic for a future event to take place.

He said: “I’m confident that a Pride event in Fermanagh would be a draw to the area, and prove to be a great day out for everyone.”

Support

Councillor Gannon offered his support for anyone wishing to set up a committee to organise Fermanagh Pride events in the future.

He said: “It may be too late for a big event this year, but I’ll assist anyone who is interested in getting a Fermanagh Pride committee set up, whether it be for an event this year, or in future.

“If there is anyone who is interested in getting involved, I’ll be more than happy to support them in any way I can.”
