There has been an application for sponsorship lodged for one pride event in the Fermanagh and Omagh District thus far.

A Fermanagh and Omagh District Council (FODC) spokesperson confirmed that an application for sponsorship has been lodged for Omagh Pride.

A spokesperson for FODC said: “The Head of Community Services can confirm that the Council has received an application for sponsorship from Omagh Pride.

"The assessment process is ongoing, a report will be taken to the Regeneration and Community Committee on Tuesday 14 June.”

The Pride celebrations in Omagh will take place on September 10 this year, almost a year on from when the Tyrone county town first celebrated Pride back in 2021.

Around the world, many pride celebrations are held the month of June as it marks the anniversary of the 1969 Stonewall protests and riots and is widely celebrated as LGBT+ Pride Month. However, some communities and countries host pride celebrations on other months of the year.

It has also been confirmed that FODC are working through proposals regarding the potential for two rainbow crossings symbolising the LGBT+ flag to be installed in the district, it is estimated that such crossings would cost around £20,000 each.

The proposals were first brought before the Council chamber last September and were proposed by Councillor Dónal O’Cofaigh. The motion passed but there was some councillors who expressed concern at the costs of these crossings and how they would impact the visually impaired.

Providing an update to The Impartial Reporter, A FODC spokesperson said: “Officers are continuing to work on the rainbow crossings proposal and will present an update report to members in the coming months.”
