PEOPLE out and about in the centre of Enniskillen have been watching where they tread lately, as all kinds of words, names and sayings have popped up engraved in the pavement.

The ‘Walking on Words’ initiative from Fermanagh and Omagh District Council has seen engravings related to the busy market town’s past laid out across the town centre, courtesy of the newly-installed and specially-engraved flagstones.

The often quirky – and sometimes obscure – engravings pay tribute to some of the people, sayings and places that have been a part of Enniskillen’s rich and storied past, with their installation following closely on the heels of the extensive works carried out in the town centre.

With a digital map on the way from the Council to help showcase and explain the engraved flagstones, for now, people will be able to step over the references to the town that are literally scattered below their feet, and ponder what they each refer to.
