A man who told police officers he was returning Class C drugs despite driving in the opposite direction to where the person lived has been given a prison sentence.

At around 12.30am on July 16, 2021 police stopped a car and detected a smell of cannabis.

Following a search of the car 14 Lyrica tablets were discovered under where Matthew Taggart (25), of Rossorry Church Road, Enniskillen was sitting.

He stated they were left by a male at his house and he was transporting them back to him despite going in the opposite direction.

Several attempts were then made to interview Taggart but he did not comply.

Taggart was cautioned and made no comment.

His barrister, Ciaran Roddy, told the court it was a relatively small amount of Class C drugs and that Taggart pleaded guilty at the earliest opportunity.

Convicting Taggart of possession of Class C drugs, Deputy District Judge Trevor Browne said Taggart has been foolish enough to immerse himself in the world of drug consumption and was paying the price for it but was not aware of it yet.

He sentenced Taggart, who appeared via videolink from Maghaberry Prison where he is currently a serving prisoner, to three months to run concurrently with his existing sentence.
