A well-known teacher who is battling cancer has paid tribute to all those who donated money to a cancer charity’s fundraising walk.

Cancer Fund for Ireland teamed up with former Irish rugby and Ulster captain, Rory Best for an 180-mile walk which saw him come through Fermanagh. Rory was in Enniskillen recently to receive the cheque for the monies raised. For the event, Connor McBarron, who was diagnosed with a rare form of cancer in 2013, along with others decided to fundraise for the event as well and they managed to raise a massive £24,000.

“This was a worthy cause, which my family and I have experienced much support from since my own cancer journey ... and the event helped us to fundraise for the charity,” explained Connor, who along with others who helped to fundraise, presented a cheque to Rory Best when he visited Fermanagh last month.

Donations came from all over the county, including St. Michael’s College, where Connor worked, Ballinamallard United, Enniskillen Rugby Club and Fermanagh GAA.

Biggest amount

All in all it totalled up to be the single best individual amount raised across Ireland in conjunction with the Rory Best Miles to Mayo walk.

“We were indebted to the generosity of the people,” said Connor, “the many schools, sporting bodies and organisations from across the county who all contributed to this huge amount of money being fundraised for the Cancer Fund for Children Ireland. It was all very much appreciated.

“Your generosity will indeed help many families within our county in many ways in the years to come.”
