THE Devenish Dragons launched their dragon boats on the shores of Lough Erne on July 1.

Launched by Cancer Connect NI, two dragon boats have been purchased for the use of those directly impacted by a cancer diagnosis, with a place to heal emotionally, build physical strength and nurture their mental wellbeing.

Speaking on behalf of Cancer Connect NI, Elaine Walker said: “It is fitting that we support a water-based activity for cancer survivors and supporters in Fermanagh.

“Our beautiful lakes offer a wonderful resource for recreation, fitness and overall wellbeing. Dragon Boats have become a very popular way to get out on the waterways.”

Elaine listed some of the benefits of dragon boating and how the activity can “improve a range of movement at the shoulder, general fitness, strength, flexibility, core stability, coordination, proprioception, balance and energy levels”.

She continued: “The benefits are a mixture of health and social benefits that could apply to most group physical activities, but a big one seems to be the overall improvement in wellbeing and self-confidence through participation in a team or group.

“I personally know that from being part of an open water swimming group on the Erne.

“The physical benefits aside, it is apparent that activities on the water give a special enhancement in both physical and mental wellbeing.”

The practice started in Canada when Dr. Don McKenzie formed the first breast cancer survivors’ dragon boat team to test the effect of strenuous upper body exercise on lymphoedema and general wellbeing.

Dr. McKenzie found that the sport showed improved lymphoedema symptoms for those with the condition, plus wider benefits for all paddlers in the team, and found dragon boating was a good way of having fun following a cancer experience.

Dr. McKenzie’s work has led to a movement of breast cancer survivors’ dragon boat racing, and there are several groups who now participate across the island of Ireland, including neighbouring Donegal Dragons and the Lagan Dragons.

The Devenish Dragons are a non-profit dragon boating club and are affiliated to the charity Cancer Connect NI. For further information, visit the Cancer Connect NI Devenish Dragons Facebook page or email info@cancerconnectNI.org.
