Fermanagh South Tyrone MLA Tom Elliott has expressed his shock and sadness following what he claimed was a “sectarian-motivated action” in County Tyrone.

Contents in an Assembly field for the Twelfth of July in Castlecaulfield, Co. Tyrone were damaged on Sunday evening with Union flags left strewn across the ground, as well as bunting hung by organisers.

The South Tyrone village of Castlecaulfield will host the biggest Twelfth Demonstration in Co. Tyrone, where as many as 40,000 spectators are expected.

Mr. Elliott said: "This type of sectarian-motivated behaviour is absolutely disgraceful. A lot of hard work goes into preparation for the Twelfth, and to see such bigoted behaviour towards our culture is disheartening.

"The Twelfth is a joyous occasion that brings family and friends together at this time of year.”

Mr. Elliott said that he will be liaising with the PSNI on the issue. In a statement, he said: “The community of Castlecaulfield and the wider area are resilient, but where is this shared future that's often talked about?

“Hatred of this kind cannot be tolerated and is deeply disappointing in what should be a tolerant society.”

A spokesperson from Castlecaulfield District Orange Order issued a statement and photographs following the discovery of the damage.

They said: “Unfortunately, after preparing Castlecaulfield for the Twelfth of July on Tuesday, we find out that tonight a hate crime has happened at our assembly field.

“We have been busy all week to ensure the village is in top order for the Twelfth, with tidying up happening all week.”

Orange Brethren from the districts of Killyman, Stewartstown, Cookstown, Pomeroy, Coagh and Benburb, accompanied by local Women's and Junior Lodges, will join with the host district, Castlecaulfield, as upwards of 70 Lodges and more than 50 bands will participate in the annual gathering.
