Police on mobile patrol at Lisnaskea stopped a car being driven by an uninsured and disqualified driver, a court has heard.

On May 31, at around 8pm police were in the Carrowshee Park area of the town when they observed a vehicle entering the park before leaving it shortly after, Enniskillen Magistrates Court heard on Monday.

They recognised the driver as Gerard Joseph Dolan (52), of Drumhaw Park, Lisnaskea, and had a suspicion he was a disqualified driver.

Police managed to intercept the vehicle by way of a checkpoint.

Dolan was told of the reasons for the stop and he initially denied that he was disqualified. But when asked to produce his driving licence, he accepted he was disqualified from driving, and he was cautioned, to which he made no reply.

Dolan's solicitor, Garry Smyth, told the court he had explained to his client the difficulty and jeopardy he had placed himself in and the sentencing options that were available to the court.

He said Dolan had co-operated with Probation for the pre-sentence report, and while the defendant had been before the court several times, he had not been dealt with by way of community disposal.

Mr. Smyth added that work undertaken by Probation could lead to Dolan avoiding appearing in court in the future.

District Judge Steven Keown said he was conscious of taking up Probation's time with a person who had disregard for road users, and warned Dolan if he got behind the wheel of a car or came back before the court again, he would go to prison.

Judge Keown warned Dolan that the stakes were high, and told Mr. Smyth to reinforce to his client the tightrope he was walking on.

For having no insurance and driving while disqualified, Dolan was given 200 hours of community service, and a two-year driving disqualification.
