The news that Brian Wilson, formerly of Glenall, Irvinestown and in recent years at Lowstherstown Court, had passed away on Tuesday, July 19, was received with profound sadness.

He was predeceased by his parents, Johnny and Annie, and brothers John and Patrick.

In his long and active life, he provided much needed support to various aspects of the farming community.

Brian, without hesitation or reward, was always on hand to help when and where ever he could.

He was a hard-working and meticulous farmer in the fields around Glennall and Drumsara.

He was the legendary bar man and general manager in the Central Bar on Main Street, where he created a homely atmosphere around the open turf fire.

Brian was highly-respected by the clientele of all ages, but particularly by fellow farmers and senior citizens to whom he often provided a valuable listening ear and good advice.

Brian, along with others, had the wisdom and foresight to help establish the Irvinestown Credit Union in 1971.

He then assisted with its growth in becoming one of the largest financial organisations in the area.

He also served with distinction as Chairman and in various other roles in the Credit Union.

He also was available as a local taxi service, which was greatly appreciated by pensioners.

In later years he was actively involved in the life of Lowtherstown Court as he provided essential support to many fellow residents.

He served as the Treasurer of the Tenants’ Committee and also as the Treasurer of the Day Care Project.

At all times, he was highly-respected by everyone he came into contact with, and was widely regarded as a positive and constructive community person.

As Reverend Father Kevin Duffy PP said in his eloquent eulogy during Brian’s Requiem Mass:

“Brian was a gentle man and a gentleman.”
