The driver of a car involved in a road traffic collision (RTC) with a lorry in the Derrylin area this morning (August 18) was "heavily trapped" and had to be cut from his vehicle by firefighters.

The Northern Ireland Fire and Rescue Service (NIFRS) received a call at 7am regarding the RTC which occurred at Main Street, Derrylin.

One NIFRS appliance from Lisnaskea attended the incident. A fire appliance from Belturbet was also at the scene.

A NIFRS spokesperson said: "Firefighters were called to a two-vehicle RTC involving a car and a lorry.

"The driver of the car was heavily trapped and firefighters used cutting equipment to rescue him from his vehicle. He was then taken into the care of the Northern Ireland Ambulance Service.

"The incident was dealt with by 8.47am."

The Northern Ireland Ambulance Service (NIAS) received a 999 call at 6.57am following reports of the RTC.

NIAS despatched one Emergency Crew, one Rapid Response Paramedic and one HEMS Team attended by road to the incident.

A NIAS spokesperson said: "Following assessment and initial treatment, one patient was taken to Royal Victoria Hospital by ambulance."

The PSNI are advising motorists that Main Street, Derrylin is currently closed due to the RTC.

Diversions are in place via the Doon Road.

A PSNI spokesperson said: "Please avoid the area if possible and seek an alternative route for your journey."
