A Cavan man has been disqualified from driving after he was convicted of being in charge of a vehicle with excess alcohol in his breath.

At around 1.50pm on September 4, police attended to a white Mercedes car parked at McNean Park, Belcoo.

Shaun McGovern (31), of Blacklion, Co. Cavan, was asleep in the car and when police woke him his speech was slurred, and there was a strong smell of alcohol.

He produced the car key from the centre console before failing a preliminary breath test before giving an evidential reading of 80mg of alcohol in 100ml of breath.

McGovern was arrested and told police to “get it done and stop f***ing about”.

Gary Black, McGovern’s solicitor, told the court his client had been drinking at a friend’s house before going to sleep in the car.

He said the key was not near the admission, and McGovern had given no thought to going to sleep in the vehicle, and he fully accepted the charge.

McGovern was disqualified from driving for one year and fined £200.
