An SDLP councillor has claimed there are plans to withdraw emergency surgical services from the South West Acute Hospital.

Councillor Paul Blake made the announcement at the end of Tuesday night's full Fermanagh and Omagh District Council meeting when he spoke on information he received about the withdrawal of services.

However, the Department of Health has refuted the claim and said no decisions have "yet" been reached on "changes at SWAH".

"It was recently brought to my attention that the Health Minister is due to come down to this district at the end of the month to announce the withdrawal of emergency surgical services from the South West Acute Hospital in Enniskillen," said Councillor Blake.

A spokesperson for the Department said it was aware of staffing issues for general surgery in SWAH but "no decisions have yet been taken on changes at SWAH".

They also said the Minister would not be visiting the hospital in the coming weeks to make an announcement.
