A man has been given a suspended sentence after he was found with Class-B and Class-C drugs in a car close to Teemore.

Enniskillen Magistrates Court heard on Monday that on May 26, police were conducting a vehicle checkpoint at Teemore Cross on the Belturbet Road along with Customs and Revenue personnel.

A Mercedes approached the checkpoint before doing a u-turn and driving off. However, police caught up with the car, and stopped it.

When officers spoke to the passenger – Duane Costello (33), of Loughlinstown Wood, Dublin – they detected a strong smell of cannabis and conducted a search.

The court further heard a package was found on Costello's leg containing around eight ounces of cannabis and 10 Zopiclone tablets.

Representing himself at the court on Monday, Costello said in May he had a knee injury and he was using the tablets as a muscle relaxant, while the cannabis was also to help him relax.

However, District Judge Steven Keown said it was not an "insignificant amount" of drugs, to which Costello apologised to the court and said it would never happen again.

For the possession of Class-B and Class-C drugs, Costello was given a one-month sentence, suspended for 12 months.

Before he left the courtroom, Costello said he wished to make a donation to charity as well, and was advised there were plenty of places in Enniskillen where this could be done.
