A Newtownbutler man has been convicted of several driving offences after he was stopped by police.

On December 9, 2021, police stopped Daniel Maughan (24), of Milltown Court, Newtownbutler at Moorlough Road, Newtownbutler, driving a Mercedes car.

Enniskillen Magistrates Court heard on Monday that Maughan was cautioned for no driving licence, to which he responded that it was with the DVA to get points endorsed.

He was not able to provide further driving documents, and was ordered to produce them at a police station within the required timeframe.

Maughan elected for Lisnaskea Police Station, but checks on December 21 showed he had failed to do so.

Sean Pól Begley, the barrister for Maughan, told the court said this matter was of Maughan's own making, but pointed out he had been engaging positively with Probation about issues around driving.

He said Maughan accepted he was driving when he should not have been, and although he was accompanied by a qualified driver he did not have L plates displayed.

Mr. Begley said his client apologised, and there was no excuse, but he was trying to make amends and asked the court to allow him to show he can.

Deputy District Judge Laura Ievers told Maughan that because of his previous record of no insurance, the custody threshold had been passed.

However, she decided to deal with the matter by way of a suspended sentence.

Convicting Maughan of using a motor vehicle without insurance, no driving licence, no vehicle test certificate and no L plates displayed, Judge Ievers handed down a three-month prison sentence, suspended for two years, along with a one-year driving ban and £300 in fines.
