A continental flavour has permeated all aspects of life at Portora Royal School in recent days as the students and staff take part in their own European Awareness Week.

Everything from school meals to science lessons have been given a European dimension in an effort to show the influences the various members of the European Community have on our lives.

The idea for the European Awareness week came from the headmaster, Mr. Richard Bennett, and was taken up by a small committee under the chairmanship of Mr. John Caswell, head of modern languages, and including Mr. Martin Todd, head of biology, Mr. Douglas Hutton, head of art, and Mr. Glen McNeill, geography teacher.

The event has taken a year to plan, with every department in the school bringing a continental aspect into normal lessons.

Music classes have been focusing on European composers, science classes on the contribution made by European scientists.

Even the school lunch menu has been spiced with the flavours of countries like Greece, Spain, Germany and France.
