A man who was disorderly at the South West Acute Hospital (SWAH) has been handed a suspended sentence.
On August 14, police were called to the SWAH by paramedics due to a patient being aggressive in the ambulance, Enniskillen Magistrates Court heard on Monday.
Intoxicated
When police arrived, they observed Aaron Mimna (37), of Dunbreen Close, Omagh, intoxicated and swearing at staff and patients.
Mimna was asked to behave but he ignored this, and continued shouting, causing distress in the hospital.
Embarrassed
Fergal Logan, his solicitor, told the court his client felt highly-embarrassed and ashamed of the incident.
He said Mimna received a blow to the head before the incident and added that the defendant was not an individual “given to that nature of conduct”.
Custody
District Judge Steven Keown told Mimna the court took this type of behaviour, especially when it occurs in a hospital setting, “extremely seriously”, and that it would usually be dealt with by custody.
But taking into account Mimna’s early plea, Judge Keown dealt with it by handing down a four-month prison sentence, suspended for two years, for disorderly behaviour.
