A PHOTOGRAPHER and former policeman, originally from Enniskillen, who is accused of attempting to murder two women by driving his car through the display window of an undertaker's business, has been remanded in custody following a second court appearance.

William 'Bill' McBurnie's ex-partner and her mother were in the premises of Zoe Turnbull Funeral Directors in Market Place, Jedburgh, when the incident happened last week.

The 55-year-old made a second private appearance at Jedburgh Sheriff Court before Christmas and faced a total of five charges.

In addition to the two attempted murder charges, he is accused of domestic abuse towards an ex-partner, breaching bail and also breaching a liberation condition.

He made no plea and was fully committed for trial.

McBurnie - who gave an address in Jedburgh and has a freelance photography business in the town - was remanded in custody. Several roads in Jedburgh town centre were closed for several hours last week following the incident when a car ploughed through the main window and into the reception area of the undertaker's business.

Checks were made on the safety of the building decorated in Christmas lights.

The vehicle was lodged almost entirely inside the premises which contains a mortuary.

Ms Turnbull only opened her undertaker's business in March of this year.
