A pre-application community consultation event on the future site of Enniskillen Royal Grammar School (ERGS) took place last Wednesday, January 25.

The display, which took over the dining hall of the Lough Shore campus, unveiled how the new-look site could look in the future as the two current ERGS sites merge into one.

The plans are sympathetic to the listed parts of the building, including the front facade.

A briefing provided by Juno Planning & Environmental Ltd. broke down some of key points around the site, as follows.

• The proposed site currently has two access points, a main entrance accessed from the Derrygonnely/Lough Shore Road, and a secondary entrance further north west accessed from Castle Lane via Lough Shore Road.

• There are significant level changes across the site from the access roads up to the current school accommodation.

• All existing accommodation with exception to the listed structures (Portora House, Steele hall and Entrance Gates) are proposed for demolition.

• Due to the adjacency to Portora Castle, and the long history of the site, significant archaeological evidence is anticipated.

Speaking about last week’s consultation event, the school principal, Miss Elizabeth Armstrong, said: “Last Wednesday we marked a significant milestone for our school community as we welcomed members of our community to the pre-application community consultation event in the Dining Hall at our Lough Shore site, where our exciting new school build will be sited.

“Those who attended were able to view the design team’s plans for this exciting and unique school build for our community in Fermanagh.

“We were delighted with the very positive response to this event, which brings our much-anticipated new school build another important step closer to fruition.

“We look forward to sharing the information on display on that evening with our prospective students and their parents at our Open Evening on Tuesday, February 7,” she added.
