Construction works for the redevelopment of the Ardhowen Theatre in Enniskillen are now to commence in 2024, Fermanagh and Omagh District Council has confirmed this week.

The Council had previously announced last April that the theatre would close in the spring/summer of 2023, to facilitate the full refurbishment, which is estimated to cost £7.14 million.

However, when asked this week by The Impartial Reporter for an update on the timescale of the Ardhowen’s redevelopment, a Council spokesperson said: “The Integrated Consultants Team has commenced work on the Ardhowen Theatre redevelopment project. The team is currently preparing concept designs and the associated costs.

“It is anticipated that construction works will commence in 2024, with an estimated construction period of 18 months.”

This newspaper also asked if the Council had now confirmed alternative venues to host arts events and activities for when the theatre closes?

The spokesperson responded: “The Council is considering a range of options for alternative provision of arts and cultural activities for during the construction period, and is exploring how best to support arts organisations and audiences.

“Options include both venue- and non-venue-based approaches.

“The decision as to the best approach for the district and its residents will be informed by potential benefits and underpinned by affordability.

“No decision as to a preferred approach has been taken at this time.”

Appointed

In late January of this year, the Council announced that it had appointed a collaborative design team for the theatre’s development, led by Hall McKnight Architects.

“The refurbishment project aims to enhance the visitor experience, improve accessibility and inclusivity, provide new opportunities for artists and audiences, ensure the facility meets the future needs of the local community, and create a more environmentally sustainable venue,” said the Council spokesperson.
