An Irvinestown pupil had the chance to celebrate the Chinese New Year in style recently after she achieved a Highly Commended Award in the Confucius Institute at Ulster University’s (CIUU) Year of the Rabbit poster competition.

The P1 to P5 children at St. Paul’s PS, Irvinestown, are learning Mandarin in school.

The children also took part in the art competition organised by Dr. Yan Liu, Director of CIUU, in which Cassie McGrath won the hugely impressive award.

Cassie along with her parents, Roisin and Marty, and teacher Mrs. Anne Molloy, received an invitation to South West College’s Confucius Hub gala event to celebrate Chinese New Year in late January.

They were treated to a delicious Chinese meal followed by music, song and dance performed by the Mandarin teachers.

The Confucius Institute for Northern Ireland at Ulster University also invited Cassie and her mum to a Chinese New Year celebration event on February 3 at Stormont.

As well as enjoying a host of musical performances and hearing speeches, Cassie’s own personal achievement was recognised, as one of their Highly-Commended entries in the Key Stage One category of the Year of the Rabbit poster competition.

Cassie’s prizes included a reproduction of her poster, a cuddly toy and Waterstone’s vouchers for her and for the school.
