An Enniskillen man has been fined and ordered to pay compensation to a police officer he assaulted.

It was heard at Enniskillen Magistrates Court last Monday, April 3 that on November 24, 2022, police were on patrol of the Castle Archdale Caravan Park when they observed a Ford Fusion car stopped at the main avenue.

When police drove up to the car it drove off before it was signalled to stop, the court heard.

There were a number of males in the car, including Darren Michael Patrick Brown (35), of Derrychara Drive, Enniskillen. He failed to provide his details or details of the driver.

Brown also attempted to get out of the car to attack the officers, attempting to bite an officer twice, and making threats against them, the court further heard.

Brown’s barrister, Stephen Fitzpatrick, said his client should “know a lot better” and there was “far too much alcohol on board”.

He said Brown wanted to apologise to the officers, and this behaviour was not how he normally would engage with police.

Mr. Fitzpatrick asked the court to give Brown credit for his relatively early plea, and added that “hopefully, he will have learnt his lesson”.

District Judge Alana McSorley told Brown that because of the early plea she would keep the sentencing to a fine only.

However, she added that this was “a nasty incident for police to deal with”.

For obstructing a constable in his duty and assaulting an officer, Brown was fined a total of £350, and also had to pay compensation of £100.
