On March 23, Fivemiletown Branch, Royal British Legion (RBL) hosted an awards night for their Poppy Appeal collectors.

Mr. Mark Byers, the Fivemiletown Poppy Appeal Organiser, thanked Mr. Harry Alexander – No. 5 Group RBL President, for coming along to present the certificates and awards.

He also welcomed Mr. David Mawhinney, the Brookeborough Poppy Appeal Organiser, and members of his team for coming along.

Five collectors who had completed 50 years of service were presented with certificates and medals: Mrs. Shelia Burke, Mrs. Jessie Browne, Mrs. Joan Browne, Mrs. Donna Harron and Mrs. Phyllis Clarke.

Two collectors – Mrs. Renee Lendrum, and Mrs. Edna Mawhinney, who were previously recognised for having completed 50 years of service – were also in attendance.

Certificates and awards were also presented to Mrs. Sandra Dunlop for 40 years’ service; Mr. Austin Lendrum, Mrs. Frances Magee, Mr. Victor Magee, Mr. Hugh Mallaghan and Mrs. Karen Porter for 25 years’ service; Ms. Ruth Kane for 10 years’ service; and Mr. Robert Carson, Mr. Adrian Somerville and Ms. Chloe Porter for five years’ service.

Several Poppy Appeal Collectors who were unable to attend on the night were individually presented with their awards later: Mrs. Muriel Henry (40 years’ service), Mrs. Bernice Kyle (30 years’ service) and Mr. Don Williamson (five years’ service).

The 2022 Fivemiletown Poppy Appeal raised a total of £9,368.61.

The recently published ‘Fivemiletown Remembers – 100 years of Uniform & Service’ book which commemorates the 100th anniversary of Fivemiletown branch, RBL, 1923 – 2023, is available for sale in Fivemiletown from Beatty’s Spar, Ballylurgan Hardware and Fivemiletown RBL. The book is in a hardback format, with 255 pages, and is fully illustrated in colour throughout.
