Jill Mahon is a first-time DUP candidate in the local elections in the Enniskille DEA. Perhaps known to many as Jill Warrington, she is originally from Tempo. Jill works as a part-time teacher, is married to another DUP candidate (David Mahon, Erne North), is a mother of four children.

Why did you get into politics?

I was always taught the importance of voting from my parents, and the vital role that local political representation can bring.

I enhanced my passion for local politics when my husband, David, was a councillor for Erne North from 2014-2019; he is seeking re-election again.

This close family connection allowed me to see at first hand the positive and lasting impact a local councillor can have on our services, industries, and those they represent.

I feel it is vital that our elected representatives maintain contact with their constituents all the time, not just at election time.

I want to be able to help others and make a difference to their lives as I currently do though my charitable works, community activity and employment within the education sector.

Why should people vote for you?

Local politics matters. Those we elect to serve have to shape and champion the challenges being faced by families.

I am just an ordinary working mum who understands the strains and pressures that face families.

I come with experience through supporting my husband on the Council, my experience as a teacher, and my various charitable and cultural roles. However, the best attribute I can is bring is being a working mum with a passion to support families and enhance the frontline services we rely upon.

What are the issues you will be fighting for in your DEA?

All politics are local, and local pressures need political intervention. The cost of living crisis and deterioration of vital services are impacting us all.

In addition to our roads networks and education system, the South West Acute Hospital (SWAH) is one of our most critical frontline service.

A strong local DUP team will ensure that the challenges and opportunities that the SWAH holds are fought for at the heart of government.

What are the biggest issues facing the Council area?

Household rates bills are increasing while the quality and availability of services are decreasing. Value for money is being demanded more than ever by people and businesses right across our country.

We cannot allow employees, hardworking families and their communities to continue witnessing neglect of our most basic frontline services.

We have an education system in crisis and a health system at breaking point.

Only a strong DUP team can ensure that proper financial investment and strategic direction is taken to shape these services for the next generation.

What are the issues the electorate have raised with you?

Childcare and lack of childcare provision, after schools and summer clubs for all, and help for hard-working parents.

Caring for the elderly and ensuring they can feel safe in their homes.

Frustration at the state of the roads and a lack of GP services are something we can all empathise with.

How can we improve the Fermanagh and Omagh District Council area?

The key to shaping strategic change is to listen to the concerns of the people. An election campaign is a perfect time to do this, but I can assure the electorate that, if elected, I will continue to engage in a constructive manner right across the county.

Along with my DUP colleagues, I will work across government to ensure that the financial and strategic decisions the Council take will regenerate this area we love and give value for money.
